The Maine Recreation and Parks Association expresses our strong support for Question 4 on the upcoming ballot, the Maine trails bond. Investing in our trails is not just about enhancing our outdoor recreational opportunities; it is about supporting the health, economy, and well-being of our communities.
Maine’s trails are vital for countless outdoor activities, from hiking and biking to snowmobiling and cross-country skiing. Maine’s trails are more than just pathways through nature: they support the $3 billion outdoor recreation economy, create jobs across the state of Maine, are essential sources of activities, have demonstrated to positively benefit physical and mental health, and provide connections between communities. By approving this bond, we can ensure the maintenance, expansion, and development of these essential resources.
Despite their importance, many of our trails are in dire need of repair and enhancement, especially after recent unprecedented storms and record level use. The funding from this bond will help improve trail access and safety, create jobs, and promote sustainable tourism.
This is an investment in our state’s future, encouraging a healthy lifestyle and preserving Maine’s breathtaking natural beauty for generations to come. Plans are being developed for expanded trail networks across the state, but funds are lacking to make them a reality.
The Maine trails bond will provide sorely needed funding to repair and expand trails statewide creating safe and accessible outdoor spaces for all. We urge all Maine citizens to vote in favor of Question 4. Trails strengthen the social fabric of towns and cities all over Maine, including yours! Let’s secure the future of our trails and, in turn, the health and vitality of our communities.
